Nate's Fishing BlogAugust 13 GamehavenHit up Gamehaven Lake this afternoon and finally ran into a good sized bass in this lake. It's about time. October 10 I haven't been fishingSince my last post about a million years ago I have only been fishing about 3 times. I didn't catch anything worth bragging about on the internet but I think I did catch a few bass.
I think I might have to take up ice fishing this winter. I'm still getting over the fact that it's so cold but everyone who does it says it's not that bad. I guess there still might be time to get a little fishing done this weekend if it warms up a little bit.
Stay Tuned. June 14 FishingBeen doing a lot of fishing and not so much blogging. I've had some good luck fishing for trout at Foster Arend and some excellent luck at Chesterwood. One of my bosses at work tipped me on how to fish Chesterwood but I'm sworn to secrecy.
At Foster I've caught most of my trout on Kastmaster spoons including a nice 16" rainbow. At Chesterwood I've been getting some great bluegill and this amazing 18'' bass. My fiance' also got some nice fish at Chesterwood last time we went. I'm hoping to take my dad there when he comes to visit in two weeks/
Happy Fishing!
May 10 Long Day of FishingToday was my last day of college at Rochester Community and Technical College. It was also my first day with my new digital camera. To celebrate I fished one stream and three different lakes today. I didn't catch any trout in Mill Creek or Foster Arend although at Foster I had a couple hit. I had my best luck at Willowcreek where I caught a couple small bass, several nice sunfish, and a great crappie. I then fished Chesterwood Lake (Also known as Bear Creek) for the first time and got a nice bass and a nice crappie in my first twenty minutes.
I caught most everything today on a 2" Berkley Powergrub on a 1/16 ounce jig and got a couple bluegills on a 1/8 ounce Roadrunner. I also some some good sized bass in Foster Arend and I can't wait 'til bass season opens up.
On the nature side of fishing I got to see a ton of wildlife today. At Chesterwood Park I saw a rattlesnake (some guy practically stepped on it and pointed it out to me). It was right on the side of the trail, rattling away. I also saw a wild turkey and a bald eagle.
That's all for today. More to come soon. Happy Fishing!
May 03 PicturesIt has been brought to my attention that my blog would be more interesting if it contained pictures. Today I ordered a digital camera off e-bay and I expect that my future blogs will often include photos. I also borrowed my fiance's digital camera to take on my brief fishing trip to Lake Winona.
Today I caught a couple sunfish, one real small and one was decent. Also I had trouble keeping the small bass off. I fished with an earth worm colored grub on a 1/16 ounce jig and then switched to a neon green after the bass kept biting it. The bass hit that one to though and then I switched to a roadrunner spinner jig with a 2" white and off white Berkley Powergrub. I got two bass and a sunfish on that one.
Here's a picture of one of the small bass I kept catching. Most were this size with a couple a little bigger. I can't wait 'til bass season opens and I can fish for them on purpose. April 27 Fly FishingYesterday I bought a fly rod and decided to try my luck at fly
fishing. For a couple of years I've considered taking up fly
fishing and yesterday seemed like the time was right to start. I really only went to Fleet Farm to pick up some snap swivels and 1/16 ounce jig heads but I figured since I had time I'd look around at their fly rods. I asked one of the people working there where they were and he actually ended up having to go to the back to bring a couple of boxes up for me to look at. I looked at the different fly rods while at the same time feeling bad for making the poor salesman do extra work. I saw a Martin package that came with line and several flies. It looked good and the price was right so I decided to buy it; partially out of guilt I guess. I went to Silver Lake to start practicing my casts after I read the little book that came with the package. I didn't necessarily look like a fly fishing expert but I think I didn't do too bad for my first time. I even caught a little crappie on a popper. I think I'm going to go out tonight and get a little more practice. Happy Fishing! April 24 Lake Winona ReportI fished Lake Winona Saturday, April 22. I went out at about 9am and then again around 2. Had some good luck with crappies. I caught four in the morning, two were real small but the other two were OK.
In the morning The fish seemed to be suspending in 10-15' of water although the two nicer fish were caught in shallower water closer to shore, probably in about 5-10' water.
In the afternoon my fiance' came along and we caught between 12 and 15 crappies. Of those I'd say 6 or 7 were of decent size. All the crappies but one were caught from right next to the fishing pier on the north basin (smaller side) of the lake. One other crappie was caught on the lake side of the pier while the others were all on the left side of it closer to shore.
I had a 1/8 ounce jig head with a green twirl-tail grub that I caught one fish on. The 1/16 ounce head seemed to be working better and both Laura and I caught the rest of the fish of that size. Darker colors such as dark green with black flecks and black with silver flecks seemed to be working the best.
